Steve Jobs and the Birth of Apple

Listen to the story
Narrated by Daddy
Many years ago in America, in the 1970s, there was a guy named Steve Jobs. He was a very, very clever student, but he didn't like school that much. He used to go to school and do the basic studies, but he never really liked math or anything. He loved computers.
When he finished school, he met a friend named Steve Wozniak. So both were named Steve—one was Steve Jobs, and the other was Steve Wozniak.
They got together and said, 'In those days, nobody had computers. All the computers were very big, and they were only in big factories or big companies. They were not for common people like you and me.'
Steve Jobs said, 'We will make a small computer which can fit into people's houses.'

Everybody laughed at them. They said, 'Oh, that's funny! What will normal families and children and adults do with a computer? It's of no use. Computers are only for big factories and big offices because they have to do a lot of mathematics. Normal families will not need computers.'
Steve Jobs said, 'No, we are going to create a small computer which can fit on a table.'
So they started working. They created a chip, a motherboard, and then the software. Steve Wozniak was very good at writing software programs. They created the hardware and software, and then they made a small computer which could fit on a table.
They raised some money to make more computers, and it became a very, very big hit. A lot of people bought that computer.

Both of them started a company and named it Apple. That was the birth of the company called Apple.
They started making computers and called them Macintosh. The company became very big. From just two people, they started hiring more and more employees. Suddenly they had 10,000 people, and everybody was buying their computers. They became one of the biggest companies in the world.
Steve Jobs was the head of the company. He was a very intense man—he used to be very demanding of people all the time. If he didn't get what he wanted, he would shout and scream.
He wanted to build a very small computer which could fit in people's hands. The computers they had were on tables, but he wanted something smaller. Everybody laughed at him. They said, 'That's silly. Nobody is going to carry a computer in their hands.'

Even though he had started the company, Apple threw him out. He got fired from his own company!
He started another company. After many, many years, when Apple was in trouble, he came back to Apple. After 20 years, he returned as the CEO.
He said, 'I still want to create a computer which can be in people's hands.'
Now people took him very seriously. He got all the best engineers—software engineers and hardware engineers. They started working, made designs on paper, and did a lot of research.

Finally, they created a computer which people could hold in their hands. They called it the iPad.
It became a big hit. Everybody in the world bought an iPad, and Apple became the richest company in the world.
Then Steve Jobs said, 'I also must create a phone which people can not only hold in their hands but can hold in their palms.'
Again, people laughed at him. In those days, all phones had very small screens and lots of buttons—like the phone you have at home with buttons and a small screen.

He said, 'No, I want to create a big screen so people can have applications, take photos, and search on the internet. And there is no need for a keyboard.'
Again, people laughed at him. They said, 'Nobody is going to do that. People use phones just to make phone calls. They don't buy a phone to surf the internet, use applications, and play games.'
He said, 'No, I am going to create a phone like that. Everybody is going to change the way they use phones. They are going to play games on it, search the internet on it, have all the applications on it, and send messages to each other using apps.'
So he started creating a phone which could fit in people's hands, have a big screen, and be connected to the internet.

He called it the iPhone.
He was the first person who created a phone with a big screen without a keyboard. You could touch the screen, and your hand could make things work. Earlier, when you couldn't touch the screen, you needed a keyboard.
It became a big hit. Everybody in the world bought that phone. Apple became the richest company in the world, and Steve Jobs became the richest person in the world.
But then Steve Jobs got very sick. He was not very old, but he got cancer and he died. Everybody was very, very sad.

But Apple still continued to do well. They got a new person who started heading the company. They created better and better phones, better and better computers, and better iPads.
But they always remembered that the person who created the phone, the computer, and the iPad was Steve Jobs.
Till now, everything that Apple produces—whether it's the phone or the iPad—the mark of Steve Jobs is always there in all those devices. Because Steve Jobs is no more with us, but his legacy lives on. Apple still thinks like him, and they honor his legacy by creating these devices.
It's a true story.
